Seven Small Swaps That Save Real Money

Big financial advice tends to assume you have something big to change. Most of us don’t. What we have is a hundred small leaks, and small leaks are actually the easiest thing in the world to patch.

Start with the recurring charges. Pull up last month’s statement and read every line out loud. Nearly everyone finds at least one subscription they forgot about, and cancelling it takes about ninety seconds.

Next, call your internet provider and ask, kindly, whether there’s a better plan for a long-standing customer. The worst outcome is a polite no. The common outcome is fifteen dollars a month back in your pocket.

Switch one branded staple to a store brand each shopping trip. If it’s not as good, switch back—no harm done. Most of the time, you won’t notice the difference at all.

Set the thermostat two degrees further from comfortable and add a sweater. Wash clothes in cold. Replace the three bulbs you use most with LEDs. Then compare a full billing cycle to the same month last year.

None of this is dramatic. Together, these swaps have trimmed well over a hundred dollars from my monthly spending—money that was quietly leaving without buying me anything at all.
