Counter space is expensive real estate. Every gadget sitting out should be earning its keep, and most of them aren’t.
The tools that survived my kitchen are boring: a heavy sheet pan, a sharp mid-priced chef’s knife, a digital thermometer, a sturdy pull-out organizer, and one good ceramic mug set. Between them, they cover almost everything I actually cook.
The ones that didn’t survive were the specialists—devices that do exactly one thing beautifully and then wait 51 weeks a year for their moment. If a drawer can hold it and you use it monthly, keep it. If not, the shelf is doing you a favor by staying empty.
A quick test before buying anything for the kitchen: name the last three times you would have used it. If you can’t, the money is better spent sharpening what you already own.
